What started as a simple message from Trevor Saunders of Mandalay Wellbeing CIC, soon became a monumental community effort to support refugees directly affected by the conflict in Ukraine.
Mandalay Wellbeing CIC is a not-for-profit company, based in Great Yarmouth, supporting people in need through a range of innovative projects. CJC Transport Consultant’s owner Carl Crysell had previously supported Trevor’s Christmas Stocking Campaign so when the message came through that the organisation needed a vehicle, Carl was happy to rise to the challenge. Collections of food, clothing, hygiene products and other essential items were already underway as part of a “fill an artic week’ initiative. The only problem was, the original transport had fallen through. Carl quickly contacted CJC’s client, P C Thorold Produce who not only supplied the 44 tonne vehicle, they also had a willing volunteer driver in Callum Lewis. What followed was an extraordinary effort from local businesses, Great Yarmouth residents and the Ukrainian community within the area. Carl’s knowledge of the transport industry, EU regulations and customs processes culminated in the safe delivery of all the collected items to its destination in Poland, close to the Ukraine border. Trevor summed up the experience: "It was amazing, it really was. There were so many volunteers that turned up - there must have been 50 to 60 people there at 8am on Saturday. We absolutely nailed it in terms of getting 1,000 boxes packed away and loaded onto the artic. I have been stunned by the response and grateful to everyone. "This really put the 'Great' in Great Yarmouth."
