It’s not that long until 2025 will be here.
This means HGV and LGV drivers must check that their Driver CPC training hours are up to date.
Those with PCV licences had to maintain their licences last year (2023), while drivers with HGV or LGV licences had until 2024 to meet their training requirements.
You have just a few more months to make sure that your drivers’ licences are updated and that any periodic training is completed. Failure to do so could mean that your drivers are not compliant and would be unable to drive.
Why do drivers need Driver CPC training?
Driver CPC ensures all drivers of heavy goods vehicles and large passenger transport vehicles are up-to-date with the latest road safety standards. Every five years, drivers must complete 35 hours (five days) of periodic training.
We recommend that now is the right time to check that your fleet drivers are up-to-date on their training needs. A failure to act could create logistical issues as we approach the expiry deadline. We anticipate that we will see an increase in demand for CPC training, so you should be taking proactive steps to ensure that your drivers can access the training that they need on dates that suit your business.
You and your drivers can check your Driver CPC periodic training hours via the official government website.
Why is the 2024 date significant for HGV and LGV drivers?
Driver CPC was first introduced for bus and coach drivers on 10 September 2008, with lorry drivers following on 10 September 2009.
The legislation was a European directive and was applicable to all PCV and HGV drivers across Europe.
The training was designed for it to be updated every five years.
This year (2024) is the rolling fifth anniversary of the first cohort of lorry drivers who initially undertook their training back in 2009.
As you can imagine, we don't know how many of those initial drivers are still active in the road haulage and passenger transport sector. However, if you were one of the first of that generation and you are still working, it's essential that you meet the deadline to complete your CPC training.
With just a few months left of the year, we're confident that most drivers will have already updated their CPC hours.
However, there is a risk that some may have forgotten to prioritise their training and are putting themselves at risk of being unable to drive.
As road transport consultants, our message is simple.
Check now. Book now.
Please don't leave it to the last minute to check your driver's training credentials. The sooner you can double-check each driver, the sooner you can get them booked into a training workshop.
Failing to do so could put your business at risk.
Will the CPC training provision change?
The question that everyone is asking, is “what is happening with CPC training?”
There were previous plans to potentially change the requirements making it far more flexible for drivers who only wish to drive in the UK. However, those plans were explored under the previous Conservative government and had not yet achieved parliamentary approval. it is currently unknown whether these changes will still take place.
As soon as we hear anything different, we will communicate those changes. However, in the meantime, you should assume business as usual.
